311, Dirty Heads, The Interrupters, Dreamers and Bikini Trill at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, NC
After I wrote my campaign of self-pity, I realized I didn’t tell you how great the show was. I’m definitely catching 311 the next time their around. Their live show will remove your teeth. As for the Interrupters, another new favorite. They really connected me to a slice of my past when I worked in a Punk salon…everything was at level 11.
If you’re interested with my fascination with self destruction, see the following:
I destroyed a lens in the 3rd set. Then, fiddling with it at midnight the night of the show, I cranked it back on the boat to test it out…it didn’t work and now it won’t come off the body. So far this season I’ve lost two Canon 5D Mark II bodies and a Canon 70-200 2.8 lens.
You shoulda saw it. During The Interrupters I noticed my lens was hanging by it’s wires off my camera bodie. Pretty sad. So I tried to hold it between my legs while I shot the rest of their set with my other camera. Pretty funny.
I lost my game. I was feeling kinda numb and out of it. No drive. I’m old enough not to get angry or cry, but I just felt blank. For a few clips I just stood around when Dirty Heads came up. I brought the Canon 70-200 2.8 specifically for the last two acts (Dirty Heads and 311), ‘cause I could tell them boys would generally be too far away for anything else.
But forcing myself to proceed with the wrong lens, the Canon 16-35 2.8 (which I brought for the first three acts), I mowed along. I managed to get a few keepers. Well and good.
My settings were maintained at: 1/400 sec; f/4.0; ISO 1000. Interestingly enough, at first things were set to accommodate the bright sun shining on the stage, but later, the settings were working for the bright key light of the headliners. In the Dirty Heads case, a lot of that bright light was coming at us from behind the musicians, within clouds of smoke and bright backlighting. This makes it almost impossible to get a sweet shot. This type of lighting is for mood, not for creating pretty pictures. Unfortunate for us in the pit, and for the image record of the tour.
The lighting engineer for 311 was kind enough to bring on some nice light for 311 for the first three songs, which the music photographers were allowed to photograph. Thus I managed to get a few nice ones. These are cropped way down however as all I had working at this point was one body with the 16-35mm. But I think it worked out ok in the end. 311 by the way was absolutely great. I will make it a point to catch them again!
