Tedeschi Trucks Band, Drive-By Truckers & The Marcus King Band: “Wheels of Soul” 2018

_MG_0009The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Drive-By Truckers and the The Marcus King Band, “Wheels of Soul” 2018 at the Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek in Raleigh North Carolina burned the skin right off my fingers. I couldn’t shoot fast enough, couldn’t breathe deep enough, and couldn’t tear my ears off of any, soulful note that entered the beautiful bowl of sound surrounding my tiny being in the benevolent photo pit of harmonies. I just couldn’t get enough.
_MG_0127I did my best though. Between shows we were discussing work ethic verses greatness, what makes the difference, who’s the critic, who knows the difference. The difference seems to have something to do with bliss perhaps. Follow the bliss until until your free. Absorb every moment, drench yourself with abandon, not looking back and find your compensation there. Like condensation. You gotta burn at a different temperature to get the juice. We got the juice this night.
_MG_0317The great Marcus King Band started things off in the daylight, my settings were a shutter speed of 400 at F2.8 with an ISO of around 640. The sun was coming down, shining in some golden fill…quite exotic really…but I didn’t notice it long as this guitar god shook the lenses off their brackets. As the night wore on we, (we as in me and my siblings…the lenses), moved to something like 320 / 2.8 / 800 for the Drive-By Truckers, then finally 160 / 2.8 / 1600 for the Tedeschi Trucks Band. I brought in the Canon 14mm 2.8 lens, which was a mistake as the bands positioned themselves way back around center stage. Whoa…I really needed my 70-200mm, but I didn’t bring it. I did have the 24-70mm 2.8 which I ended using primarily, and the 16 -35mm that provided my “cinamatic” landscapes. I just scraped by.
_MG_0740I attended a Lightroom workshop the other day with Scott Kelby, and it really helped make my workflow a little more interesting. I’ve been skipping moving into photoshop as much as possible lately because the photo-journalistic rock-editing thing is so demanding on speed, I’ve been letting go of details more and more…just trying to solve problems more by composition on the fly by keeping my eye on what is surrounding, and whats in back of, the musicians…trying to work that way…and just letting the crap in the shots just stay there…like water bottles.

But with my new skills, (however rudimentary), Lightroom is helping me clean some stuff up…sort of like using layers, but way more dangerous. _MG_0739
