Janelle Monae shredded the stage at The Ritz with her remarkable mechanical, maniacal deliverance of obtuse proportions. Her performance jolted my memory of the days when I owned a salon and one of the hairdressers told me I was “Gung Ho”. -I was always trying to put in more effort…to go above the 400% I was putting in 24/7. I saw that here. Janelle is quivering with cosmic energy, just busting out all over the place…how lucky we were to witness such an ever-expanding supernova of a performance! My hat’s off to her!
As the opener, St. Beauty was superlative and sexy, charismatic and intoxicating…magical and hypnotic. I didn’t want these women to stop. I look forward to seeing them again and again.
My camera settings for St. Beauty were at a shutter speed of 80, due to the dim lighting, which allowed just too much blur to show off their intoxicating rhythmic dancing. Maybe next time we will have more light, or maybe I’ll have a new camera! Ha! -I was shooting at F2.8 at an ISO of 1600 on my old Canon 5D mark 2s. The lenses that night were the Canon 14mm 2.8, 16-35 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8. For Janelle Monae, I cranked it up to 320 at F2.8 at something like an ISO of 500.
