The Flaming Lips at Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC
When ever things start slipping out of the box, I start feeling comfortable. Surreal, psychedelic environments being most relaxing. Creativity lubricates the transmitters, and things were transmitting freely at Red Hat Amphitheater the other night with Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips.
The Flaming Lips
This was the fourth time I’ve photographed The Flaming Lips, and I sincerely hope it won’t be the last. What a fun shoot to start to get a grip on how my new Canon 5D Mark IVs handle. Especially at the end of the third song where Wayne rode the Unicorn around the venue. What a riot! I was spinning my settings all over the place while he rode off into the distance as I madly tried to get an exposure where we could see his head but not over exposing the lights on the Unicorn. Well, I got close as possible I suppose.
If I was really competent I’d have my Tiffen soft edge graduated filter in my pocket ready to pull out and hold in front of the lens to balance the f-stops between the light on the beast and the rider. Oh well, next time!
Generally, I was exposing the on stage performance at: 1/320 sec; f/5.6; ISO 3200 and actually not having any time to settle on a exposure for Mr. Unicorn, I was was firing off at 1/200 sec; f/5.0; ISO 3200. We didn’t even know that he was on Mr. Unicorn out in the audience. This was going on behind us in the pit. But once we found out, the music photographers were all running around like nut cakes trying to get a shot as Wayne was being absorbed by the crowd. It was pretty funny.
